From sharp objects, boxes stacked high on top of one another, dangerous chemicals, cars and tools – the garage can be a dangerous playground for a kid and it only takes a minute for your toddler to escape your line of sight and hurt themselves. Use our fool-proof tricks to child-proof your garage, because being a preventative parent is being a good parent!
Before we offer you our own tips and tricks, check out these tips from wikihow on How to childproof the garage.
Chemicals should be kept in the garage up high and out of reach of children. You can put a lock on the cabinet you keep your chemicals and cleaning supplies in or even invest in boxes that have tight child-proof lids.
Your axe, chainsaw, hammer, shovel and other sharp tools need to be stored properly out of reach from the kids. Use an overhead rack storage system to keep these items organized and out of reach. You can install an overhead storage system yourself or hire a pro to come in and help you get the perfect fit for your home garage. If overhead storage is not where you’d like to keep these items, invest in a locker or toolbox that can’t be opened or pulled over by kids.
We highly recommend installing a pegboard that is out of reach from kids to store your tools. Not only does a pegboard get your tools organized in the garage, pegboards can be hung at any height and be adjusted easily. You can store all things tool related on a pegboard that is lifted at adult-level and if the kid’s find a way up there, removing tools from the board isn’t an easy task for toddlers.
This saying has long been passed down as a way to understand that what can’t be seem in front of you can be pushed to the back of thought. Kids are visual and while in their toddler years they are perceptive to a knee level perspective. No matter the age your kids are, look at your garage from their height and from there think of all the things you see on that level that your child could get in to. Use overhead storage and custom garage cabinets to store things out of sight. You may not necessarily realize how many items are dangerous that are in your kids direct line of sight – from bicycle chains to car door handles and outlet plugs, there are many garage dangers that will look bright and shiny to your kid!
From bikes to sports gear, kids will get into anything they can reach. Bikes can easily be pulled over on top of your child and other sports equipment that is not stored properly is an accident waiting to happen. Use bike racks that are safe and lock in bikes to ensure your cycle does not fall on your kid!
For a slip resistant garage floor, consider installing epoxy flooring. The process only takes about 72 hours and the chemicals used are not harmful to your kids – garage floor coatings are extremely low in VOC’s! Polyaspartic floors can have a textured coating for even more foot grip, so your child won’t fall if the floor is slippery! You can DIY or hire a professional epoxy floor installer!
Cars are deadly and not only on the road. A hot car in the garage can kill an adult or child of any size. Kids can easily get into the car if it is unlocked. To protect your family from having a potentially fatal car accident in the garage, invest in an auto lift. Auto lifts keep cars up off the ground where children cannot get into them and they create more floor space for your garage. Check out all the options you have with auto lifts here.
The garage door can be extremely dangerous to children. You should ensure that the garage manual is read properly, the garage door is in good working order and install remotes away from your child’s reach. Common Sense and Preparation Can Prevent Accidents!
Whether your kid is just a baby, a toddler or even a growing child – garage safety is a must. A lot of safety techniques are common sense, but some things are easily overlook. Get in the mindset to clear clutter and really organize your garage while implementing safety measures. Custom cabinets with locks are a great way to store items away from kids.
