Storage Hacks: Clever Tips for Organizing Your Garage

Add Some Magnetic Attraction

You probably have plenty of metal tools in your garage, like pliers and screwdrivers. Stop by the local hardware store and pick up some magnetic strips. Attach them to the bottom of a shelf or to the wall, then just line up your tools and always have them at your fingertips instead of piled up on a work table.

Spice Up Your Garage

Do you have small spice jars that you’re no longer using? Plastic is best for this five-minute project. Screw the lids to the underside of a shelf, then you can fill the spice jars with small hardware, like screws, bolts, washers and drill bits. Plastic jars like the kind bouillon cubes or instant coffee come in will work, too.

Get On a Roll

It’s sometimes inconvenient to hunt down the box of garbage bags, let alone pull out one bag and figure out which end opens. Stop by your home improvement store for a paper towel holder, just like the one you have in your kitchen. Mount it to the wall (making sure to anchor it, because garbage bags are heavy), and switch to the kind of garbage bags that come on a roll. Now you’ll always have them at hand, and as a bonus, you’ll know which end is up!

Nail It!

Storing your mops, brooms, shovels, gardening tools and more is as easy as pounding a few nails in the wall. Use a wall that you aren’t using for shelving, and use nails or pick up some hooks the next time you’re out. Simply hang these items on the wall to keep them off of the flat surfaces of your garage. For light items, you can use pegboard, but that probably isn’t strong enough for heavier hangables.
